THE CITY OF COMPOSITE PRESENCE

Group Project; Student Exchange Program in Vienna, Austria

2018

The project is located in Prater park, Vienna, a site distinctively characterized by the differentiation between the Formal and the Informal.  The distinction between these two types of spaces is made by different components of limitation of accessibility: topography changes and physical fences as well as rules and legislations. The topic of movement is what makes it a so-called Living Organism within the city. While referring to case studies such as Forum Romanum (497 BC to 312 AD), Villa Adriana (2 AD) and Colin Rowe's Collage City (1978), we imagined ways of defining the emptiness surrounding the facilities of the site, without harming its quality of liberation. When planning, we wish to preserve Prater's continuity and with shapes that would hold spatial qualities that will serve the occasional and regular users of the park and its facilities. We would like to define and emphasize the existing natural grounds of Prater, while correcting and connecting points that have a spatial and functional importance. The new elements we introduce would be permanent ones that have potentially transforming, adaptive qualities – and may be continued through Prater and into the city.
